Temple of Borobudur
Borobudur is the biggest single temple in Indonesia, could also be the largest single temple of the world. Located near to the town of Magelang, Central Java, Borobudur can be reached from the city of Yogyakarta in a half hour road trip. 



Built during the reign of 9th century AD by Syailendra Dynasty, this Buddhist temple occupies a total area of 15.129 m2, height of 34.5m. All of this majestic building was built with basic materials of stone, cut and spliced without the aid of cement, besides the splendour of the building; Borobudur was also admired for its artistic value.

The entire Borobudur-wall covered by 2670 high-class reliefs, the reliefs actually is a narrative about the value of Buddhism spiritual concept in daily life. The reliefs made with highly artistic taste and fine, carved in the hard stone. 

There are three levels of Buddhist cosmology, namely Kāmadhātu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). The narrative relief panels around the temple wall actually based of the mentioned cosmology concept. Therefore, when you are enjoying reliefs you are learning Buddha cosmology at the same time.

You will not only see the artwork in the form of reliefs, but also stunning Buddha statues made of stone and carved with such charm. There are hundreds of statues of Buddha and you'll find a statue with the different shapes and configurations of buildings at each level, different form is a depiction of spiritual achievement of a Buddhist.


UNESCO has included the site of Borobudur Temple as one of The World Heritage Site since 1991.

Where is the Location of Borobudur?

Borobudur Temple is located in Magelang, Central Java, about 40km northwest of the city of Yogyakarta or 100km southwest of the city of Semarang, capital of Central Java Province.

How to reach the site?

From Jakarta (Capital City of Indonesia) or from Denpasar, Bali need only 1 our flight to City of Yogyakarta, and then all you need is within about 40 to 50 minutes overland travel to reach locations from Yogyakarta.
