Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice) is ones of the most popular daily dishes of Indonesia. Beside its simple process, Nasi Goreng also has delicious taste and easy to be created to various variations. We can add vegetables, egg, chicken, beef, goat mead, prawn, and bacon into Nasi Goreng recipe as variation.
In 2011, an online poll by 35,000 people held by CNN International chose Nasi Goreng as the number two of their 'World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods' list after Indonesian Rendang.
Nasi Goreng made of cooked rice; the basic flavor included red garlic, garlic, pepper, chili, tomato, sweet soy sauce, salt and margarine or cooking oil. But this basic flavor can also modified depending on taste of the cooker or consumer. Sometimes they can also add sugar, shrimp paste, and other flavors.
Very easy to find Nasi Goreng anywhere in Indonesia, many restaurants put Nasi Goreng as a main menu. Also in any hotels from five stars hotels up to non star hotel or home stay even at a road side “warung” (stall).
Some condiments usually used as Nasi Goreng’s complement included:
Emping : This is a kind of crackers made of Melinjo (Gnetum gnemon Linn) fruit
Krupuk: A kind of crackers made of fish or prawn.
Fried Chicken or Chicken Sate
Acar: pickles made from vinegar preserved cucumber, shallots, carrot, and small chilli pepper
Sambal: chili sauce as additional to make more hot.
Slices of fresh vegetables: usually cucumber, tomato, lettuce and cabbage
Fried eggs or omelet (sometimes slashed).
How to make Nasi Goreng?
Easy and simple!
I will prepare you standard of Nasi Goreng, after that then you can make another Nasi Goreng with some variation depending on your taste and condiments availability:
Ingredients:
250 grams cooked rice
3 tablespoons of cooking oil
About 5 tablespoon of margarine or butter
2 tablespoon of sweet soy sauce
1 tablespoon of salt
150 gr chicken
10 ten pieces of pawn
5 pieces of mushroom
5 pieces of red garlic and 2 pieces of garlic sliced or grinded.
Vegetables: you can use carrot, snow peas, young corn flakes, cabbage etc. Suit the vegetable with amount of rice we process.
1 teaspoon of white or black pepper powder (or mix).
Condiments:
1 (200gr) cucumber, peeled and sliced
1 Fried egg
Crackers can be Kerupuk or Emping.
Chicken fried.
Cooking process:
1. Put cooking oil and margarine on a hot cooking pan. |
2. Put mixed garlic and keep stirring to prevent burning |
3. Put chicken (you can also use bacon, meat or goat meat) |
4. Put pawn. |
5. Mix pawn and chicken. |
6. Keep stirring. |
7. add sweet soy sauce. |
8. Put mushroom. |
9. Add salt |
10. Add pepper. |
11. Put rice. |
12. Add vegetables. |
13. Stir a little while and ready to be presented. |

With fried egg, slashed cucumber, fried prawn and kerupuk. |
With slashed cucumber, slashed omelet, and slashed tomato. |
