Kawung Motif inspired by the form of kind a
fruit of palm tree, this motif is intended as an expectation that people will
always remember their origins. Before the Mataram kingdom split, this batik
motif was also an official who only used by high level of the royal officials.
However, after the Mataram kingdom separated then this motif usually only used
by a petty official and common people.
List of above traditional batik motifs is just
a part of all existing traditional motifs; there are some other traditional
motifs. At present, modification and reinterpretation to the above motifs has
been making. In addition, I think, exploration for classical motifs will be
always happens and some new patterns for each motif will be born. This is about
dynamic of batik art.
2. Contemporary motifs
Contemporary motifs of batik has evolved in
such a way, the shapes, colors and designs grown more freely and explore wider
realm of possibility. We will see there are only a few colors can be found in
traditional motifs, like white, black, brown, and dark blue. However,
contemporary motif has rich of colors; virtually any color can be found there.
Contemporary batik adopts broader forms from the surroundings, from the trees,
animals, houses, modern goods to other decorative forms including abstract
forms.
In first, forms of contemporary batik motifs
are found in outside areas of the center of the royal government especially in
coastal area, so that contemporary batik motif also initialed as Coastal Motifs
(Batik Pesisiran). Now contemporary
motifs have been developed in almost the entire territory of Indonesia. This
motif has been rapidly growing because of its characteristic that follow the
dynamic trend both in coloration, form combination also models, but did not
abandon the basic grip of batik art. Below is the list of some styles of
