Part 2 : Classical Motifs Description

Parang Barong and Parang Rusak


  1. Parang
One of the famous traditional motifs of batik is Parang. The main characteristic of the motif is curved lines, which can be interpreted as the ocean waves at the center of universe power (the king). The composition of the hypotenuse of a machete also symbolizes power, dignity, greatness, and fast motion, so that the wearer is expected to be spry and adroit. There are many sub-motif / variants of Parang, below are examples the some of them:

a.1. Parang Barong
Motif Parang Barong
Parang Barong is the motif, which occupy the highest caste in traditional batik motifs because the only King was allowed to wear it. The king wears this motif in a sacred religious event or in meditation.
'Barong', is a word that refers to something big, and this is reflected in the size of these motifs. Parang Barong motif is the mother of all Parang motifs. These motifs bring a massage to the king to be always careful and to be able to develop self-control.
The creator of this motif is Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma one of the Mataram kings. The King creating this motif as expression of his spiritual experience when he carrying out his responsibility as a king; this motif is also part of his consciousness that as a human being he actually is really very smaller far than the universe and its creator.


a.2. Parang Rusak
Motif Parang Rusak
Parang Rusak formerly regarded as a sacred motif and only used by royal soldiers inside of the palace. This motif only used by the royal soldiers when return from war, if soldiers used this motif on a welcome ceremony then this means that they have won the war. It seems that the main idea of this motif is about winning report.

Parang Rusak motif was created by Panembahan Senopati, founder of the Mataram Kingdom. The creation of this motif is inspiring by his impression when he saw a process of waves hitting to a cliffs in south coast of Java island. The motif is a reflection of the wave’s energy that hit continuously to the cliffs. This motif is probably a massage to their soldiers to be always doing their duties continuously with full of effort.
